home About me Projects

I have designed or art directed dozens of new media projects since 1990, ranging in scale from small web sites to some of the largest and most ambitious public kiosk installations and electronic publications yet built.

A selection of projects follows, listed in reverse chronological order. To find out more about any of these projects please contact me.

Barcelona!

BarcelonaThese kiosks, developed for a major exhibition at Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland, Ohio, were presented using large high resolution wide screen displays and a data projector. They contain background information and images about art, people, places, and journals from Barcelona in the era of Dali, Picasso, Gaudi and Miro. The project was commissioned, designed and delivered in under two months.

The kiosks are implemented in Flash with a set of simple XML files. These incorporate not only the text content of the interactive but they also define the sequence for thumbnail indexes, create galleries of images with captions and hyperlinks, and store hotspot data for an animated map. This means that all of these aspects of the project are readily edited by the client.

Unfortunately, due to copyright reasons, this project cannot be shown online.

The Attic

The AtticThis project was built in parallel as both a web site and as a stand-alone kiosk installation at Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland, Ohio, to support a major exhibition about the Arts and Crafts Movement. The site uses Macromedia Flash and xml to randomly load a selection of objects into "The Attic". It also features an educational quiz that randomly selects ten questions from a larger pot of questions. Sound effects are used to create an evocative and fun atmosphere.

The Royal Collection Online

Royal collection OnlineThis web site includes news, events, visitor information and an online collection featuring over 5000 wonderful works of art.

The online collection is a development of the e-Gallery, a suite of public access multimedia kiosks situated in The Queen's Galleries at Buckingham Palace, London, and the Palace of Holyroodhouse, Edinburgh, which I also designed and continue to develop for the Royal Collection.

Discover Nikkei

Discover NikkeiNikkei are Japanese emigrants and their descendants who have created communities throughout the world. At the Discover Nikkei website, questions regarding "What does it mean to be Nikkei?" are debated and probed.

I designed and developed this community-building, four language, web site with the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles.

In August 2006 we added the Nikkei Album, where site visitors can document and curate the Nikkei experience, by uploading and annotating their own media and by creating themed online collections.

In April 2007 the site won the Research Site category of Best of the Web at Museums and the Web, San Francisco. You can read what the judges said about it here.

The Magical Worlds of Joseph Cornell

The Magical Worlds of Joseph cornellJoseph Cornell (1903-1972) was one of the most important American artists of the twentieth century. The DVD-ROM The Magical Worlds of Joseph Cornell offers unprecedented access to Cornell's work, providing three-dimensional views of some of his best boxes. This intimate exploration gives a virtual hands-on experience of these objects as well as a unique insight into the artist's working materials and methods.

I designed and art directed the DVD-ROM and managed the project, working very closely with the Voyager Foundation and a production team at Cognitive Applications. The project was over three years in the making, during which time I made over 20 transatlantic round trips and spent many weeks with the client in Washington D.C.

The DVD-ROM won the Gold Award in the Art category at the 2004 American Association of Museums Muse Awards. Read what the judges said about it.

It also received a BAFTA Interactive Award nomination in 2003.

It is included with the book Joseph Cornell: Shadowplay . . . Eterniday, published in September 2003 by Thames and Hudson.

Devices of Wonder

Devices of wonderThis web site accompanied an exhibition at the J Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, California. The overall site structure was designed in house while I designed and produced the interactive objects in the Flash version of the site. The Devices of Wonder web site attracted an average of 5000 visitors per week throughout the run of the exhibition. The site won a prestigious Webby Award at the sixth annual awards ceremony in San Francisco June 18, 2002.
